Most cancer-risk references organise by chemical name. Meyron also lets you start from the products you actually encounter — shampoo, bacon, drinking water, hair dye, dry cleaning — and see which IARC-classified factors research has linked to them, with the primary source cited.
Read carefully. A factor being present in a product does not mean the product causes cancer. It means research has documented that chemical in that product category. Dose, formulation, and exposure route all matter.
Personal care
- Sunscreen
Topical UV-protection products including creams, lotions, and aerosol sprays.
- Shampoo
Liquid hair cleansers, including baby, dandruff, and colour-safe formulas.
- Nail polish remover
Solvent products for removing nail polish.
- Nail polish
Coloured coatings for fingernails and toenails; solvent-based formulas can contain toluene, formaldehyde, and phthalates.
- Permanent hair dye
Oxidative permanent hair-colour products, both salon and home-use.
- Hair straightening / relaxer
Chemical treatments to straighten hair. Formaldehyde-releasing formulations are the highest-risk category.
- Semi-permanent hair dye
Non-oxidative hair colouring that fades in 4–12 washes; lower carcinogen exposure than permanent dye.
- Face cream / moisturiser
Topical products for facial skin. Preservative systems and fragrance chemistry vary widely.
- Body lotion
General-purpose skin moisturisers.
- Lipstick
Coloured lip cosmetics. Historically flagged for trace heavy metals from mineral pigments.
- Mascara
Eyelash colouring cosmetics. Preservative systems similar to other liquid cosmetics.
- Deodorant / antiperspirant
Underarm products. Aerosol formulations have been recalled for benzene contamination.
- Perfume / fragrance
Alcohol- or oil-based scent products; complex chemistry, incomplete ingredient disclosure.
- Toothpaste
Oral hygiene product. Some formulations historically contained triclosan; fluoride is the standard active.
- Skin lightening cream
Products marketed to reduce pigmentation. Some historically contained mercury or high-dose hydroquinone.
- Talcum powder
Talc-based body and baby powders. Some historical formulations were contaminated with asbestos.
- Tattoo ink
Pigment suspensions injected into the dermis. Some formulations contain PAHs, azo dyes, or heavy metals.
- Feminine hygiene products
Menstrual absorbent products. Some conventional cotton has been tested for glyphosate and dioxin residues.
- Sunbed / tanning bed
Devices emitting UV radiation for cosmetic tanning. IARC Group 1 carcinogen.
- Tobacco smoke
Combustion products from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes — inhaled directly or as secondhand exposure.
- Cigarettes
Combusted tobacco products; the leading preventable cause of cancer worldwide.
- Cigars, pipes, and hookah
Alternative combusted tobacco products; carcinogen profile similar to cigarettes.
- E-cigarettes / vaping
Aerosolised nicotine devices. Formaldehyde and volatile carbonyls detected in most aerosols.
- Chewing tobacco / snus
Non-combusted oral tobacco products.
Food & drink
- Rice
Rice grain and rice-based foods; can concentrate inorganic arsenic from soil and water.
- Bacon
Cured, salt-preserved pork belly. IARC classifies processed meat (including bacon) as Group 1.
- Sausages
Cured, salted, or fermented meat preparations. Categorised by IARC under processed meat.
- Deli meat / cold cuts
Sliced cured meats sold refrigerated. IARC processed-meat category.
- Ham
Cured pork leg. Classified as processed meat.
- Red meat
Fresh unprocessed mammalian meat. IARC classifies red meat as Group 2A.
- Grilled / barbecued meat
Meat cooked over high heat forms heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
- Very hot coffee
Coffee drunk above ~65 °C. Not the coffee itself but the temperature is IARC Group 2A.
- Very hot tea
Tea drunk above ~65 °C.
- Peanuts and peanut butter
Peanuts can carry Aspergillus mold, source of aflatoxins. Regulatory limits protect commercial supply.
- Corn (mouldy or improperly stored)
Corn can develop aflatoxin-producing mold in warm, humid storage.
- French fries / chips
Starchy foods fried at high temperature form acrylamide.
- Heavily toasted bread
Browning reactions in starchy foods produce acrylamide.
- Salt-cured fish (Chinese-style)
Traditional Cantonese-style salted fish is IARC Group 1 (nasopharyngeal cancer link).
- Pickled vegetables (traditional Asian)
Traditional Asian pickled vegetables classified by IARC as Group 2B.
- Betel nut / betel quid
Chewed traditional preparation of areca nut, betel leaf, and often tobacco.
- Traditional herbal medicines (aristolochia-containing)
Certain traditional herbal preparations contain aristolochic acid, an IARC Group 1 carcinogen.
- Alcoholic beverages
Any beverage containing ethanol. IARC Group 1 for oral, oesophageal, liver, breast and colorectal cancer.
Household
- Oil-based paint
Traditional solvent-thinned paints; still common for trim, doors, and metal.
- Paint stripper
Chemical products for removing old paint from surfaces.
- Non-stick cookware
Cookware with non-stick coatings; older items (pre-2015) may contain PFOA.
- Water-based paint
Water-thinned wall paints. Generally lower solvent exposure than oil-based but may still contain formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.
- Paint thinner / solvent
Hydrocarbon solvents for thinning oil-based paints and cleaning brushes.
- Wood stain / varnish
Coatings that colour or seal wood; typically solvent-based.
- Adhesive / glue
Solvent- or reactive-cure adhesives. Some contain formaldehyde-based resins.
- Non-stick cooking spray
Aerosol cooking oils. Older formulations relied on PFOA-based propellants.
- Drain cleaner
Strong acid or base drain products; some also contain solvents like benzene.
- Mothballs
Solid pesticide balls placed in stored fabrics. Contain naphthalene (IARC 2B) or 1,4-dichlorobenzene (IARC 2B).
- Pressed-wood furniture
Engineered wood products often glued with formaldehyde-based resins that off-gas over time.
- New carpet / rugs
Newly-installed synthetic carpet can off-gas formaldehyde and other VOCs during break-in period.
- Household pesticides
Consumer pesticide products. Active ingredients vary; some IARC-listed.
- Weed killer
Home lawn and garden herbicides; glyphosate-based products the most common.
- Scented candles and incense
Combustion of waxes and resins produces particulate matter and formaldehyde.
- Old insulation (pre-1980)
Insulation installed before ~1980 may contain asbestos.
Occupational
- Dry cleaning
Solvent-based garment cleaning; residues can linger on clothes.
- Auto mechanic work
Exposure to engine oil, solvents, lubricants, and diesel exhaust.
- Hairdresser / salon worker
Chronic exposure to hair dye, straightening chemicals, and formaldehyde-releasing products.
- Nail technician
Chronic exposure to nail polish, acetone, methyl methacrylate, and dust from artificial nails.
- Farming with pesticides
Chronic pesticide handling; some active ingredients IARC-listed.
- Construction work
Dust, silica, asbestos (older sites), diesel exhaust from equipment.
- Long-haul truck driving
Diesel exhaust exposure and night shift schedules.
- Chimney sweeping
Classic historical occupation with high soot exposure (IARC Group 1).
- Coal mining
Silica dust, coal dust, diesel exhaust from equipment.
- Aluminium smelter work
IARC-classified occupation (Group 1) due to PAH exposure.
Environment
- Drinking water (contaminated)
Municipal or well water that may contain regulated contaminants at trace levels.
- Wildfire smoke
Combustion products from vegetation fires — particulate matter, formaldehyde, PAHs.
- Traffic and roadside pollution
Nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and diesel exhaust near busy roads.
- Radon (basement / ground floor)
Naturally-occurring radioactive gas that seeps from soil into buildings.
- Wood-burning stove / fireplace
Indoor biomass combustion produces particulate matter and PAHs.
- Private well water
Untreated groundwater; may contain naturally-occurring arsenic and other contaminants.
- Secondhand smoke
Combustion products from someone else's tobacco use in shared indoor space.
Medications & medical
- Hormone replacement therapy (menopausal)
Combined oestrogen-progestogen therapy for menopause symptoms. IARC Group 1.
- Combined birth control pill
Oestrogen-progestogen contraceptive pills. IARC Group 1 (small elevated breast/cervix risk; reduces ovarian/endometrial).
- Organ transplant / immunosuppressants
Long-term immunosuppression after organ transplant is associated with elevated cancer risk.
- CT scan / X-ray imaging
Medical diagnostic imaging uses ionising radiation. Risk is dose-dependent; clinical benefit usually outweighs.
- Radiation therapy
Therapeutic ionising radiation for cancer treatment. Second cancers a documented late risk.
- Anabolic steroids (illicit)
Illicit or non-medical use of anabolic-androgenic steroids for muscle building.
- Hydrochlorothiazide (blood-pressure medication)
Common diuretic for hypertension. IARC 2020 review classified it as photosensitiser linked to skin cancer.
- Opium / opium-derived opioids
Long-term opium consumption classified by IARC as Group 1.
- Tamoxifen (breast cancer therapy)
Selective oestrogen receptor modulator used against oestrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer.
